Darryl Strawberry, an eight-time All-Star and four-time World Series champion has been in the public life for most of his life, not only for his success in MLB but also for his more personal battles.
The Los Angeles native born Darryl Eugene Strawberry on March 12, 1962 –carved himself a name in MLB following his 17-year career. He is also well known for his struggles with drugs, depression, cancer. Most recently he revealed he was also addicted to ***. The 55-year-old hall of famer told Dr. Oz he used to have *** between innings.
Darryl was the No. 1 draft pick in 1980 and was selected by the New York Mets. After three long years in the Minors, he was brought up to the Majors. He also married his first wife Lisa Andrews. He had a stellar rookie season and earned the Player of the Year award in 1983. But with all the fame also came the pressure to perform.
The couple’s marriage fell apart in 1993 following a series of troubling incidents. During their marriage, Strawberry broke her nose and was also accused of assault with a deadly weapon.
He married his second wife Charrise Simon and also helped his team win the ‘96 and ‘98 World Series championships. Again his life appeared to be shaping up on the field, but at home, his drug habit had resurfaced. It began to affect his marriage.
He said of his second marriage
“It was more different relationship with Charisse than with Lisa. Things had changed a little different in my life, but I had that anger and those abusive ways.”
Not only were things at home coming undone, but at the end of the ‘98 season Darryl was diagnosed with colon cancer. Miraculously, after surgery and six months of chemotherapy, he was back on the field the next season and helped the Yankees their third World Series championship in four seasons. But after the ‘99 season, Darryl’s life took a turn for the worst again when he was arrested for soliciting a prostitution and drug possession. He was suspended from the League. Over the next five years, Darryl lost everything — his career, his wife, and he almost lost himself, but he managed to go to a drug recovery convention where he met Tracy.
Darryl and Charisse were together from 1993 until 2006.
He met third and current wife, Tracy at a drug recovery convention. Tracy could relate to Darryl, because she had her own struggle with drug addiction. She says, “I saw a man that was very broken, even physically. A person who has addiction themselves, I could look in him and see he wasn’t even clean yet. He was sitting in his seat full of heaviness.”
“I was hurting so much,” “I was angry and mad. She came into my life, and I saw something different in her eyes.”
Tracy and Darryl became good friends. Darryl went back to church and rededicated his life to the Lord. The two were married in 2006. Together with Tracy, they founded the Darryl Strawberry Foundation, which is dedicated to children and adults with autism.
Throughout his career, Strawberry slept with a large number of women. During his recent sit down with Dr. Oz he said back in the day, all he had to was point out a woman in the crowd and tell a clubhouse attendant to bring her down.
“It was a pretty crazy lifestyle. Middle of games? Yeah,” Strawberry told Dr. Oz. “I would go between innings, and stuff like that and run back and have a little party going on. I thought it was pretty cool. That’s the addiction.”
Darryl Strawberry is the father of four children. His first son Darryl Eugene “D. J.” Strawberry Jr. was born June 15, 1985 from his first marriage to Lisa Andrews-Watkins.
D.J Strawberry is also a professional atlthe like his famous father. He is a basketball player for Beşiktaş of the Turkish Basketball Super League.
Second son, Jordan was born in 1994 from his marriage to second wife, Charisse Simon. The couple welcomed a daughter, Jade in 1995. Their third child, another daughter, Jewel –was born in 2000.
