June Huggins is the proud and supportive wife of college Basketball coach Bob Huggins. Her husband is in charge of the men’s Basketball program at West Virginia University.
Born Robert Edward Huggins, he’s also served as head coach at Walsh College (1980–1983), the University of Akron (1984–1989), the University of Cincinnati (1989–2005) and Kansas State University (2006–2007). He landed at West Virginia University –his alma mater, in 2007.
His credits are really some of the best you’ll find. The man has under his belt 800 or more career victories, over 20 NCAA tournaments and has led his teams to eight Sweet Sixteen appearances, four Elite Eight appearances, and two Final Four appearances.
But success like his, come with a downside if you want to see it like that. He is known to be a bourbon-drinking, hard-cussing, never-stopping kind of guy, some say he is just misunderstood. Some of those would certainly be June Huggins.
Truth is her husband is as much a basketball survivor as he is a survivor overall. His tenure at Cincinnati was marked by a 1998 NCAA investigation that led to NCAA probation and a loss of basketball scholarships, a lousy graduation rate (27 of 95 players), multiple player arrests and his own DUI arrest. Then in 2002, Huggins was rushed to the hospital in Pittsburgh after suffering a massive heart attack during a recruiting trip. He was fitted with the defibrillator but returned to coaching after just two weeks. He hasn’t stopped since.
June and her husband have been married for a long time, 40-years to be exact. Needless to say, June has been key in her husband’s success. She has shown her support in every way for the last four decades. Let’s meet this wonderful woman.
